Most setups fall into one of four types, and plenty of homes mix two, such as Wi-Fi cameras inside and a wired camera covering the driveway.

Wireless security cameras
A wireless security camera in NZ usually means a camera that joins your home Wi-Fi, whether it plugs in or runs on a battery. Setup takes minutes in a phone app and most record to a microSD card. The weak point is the Wi-Fi itself: most cameras use 2.4 GHz only, brick veneer and foil-backed insulation weaken the signal outside, and a congested network can drop footage. Tapo models start under $60; eufy and Arlo cost more but add features such as home hubs, 4K sensors or longer battery life.
Battery and solar cameras
With no cables at all, battery cameras suit renters and spots far from a power point. The trade-offs are that most record short motion clips rather than 24/7, can miss the first moment of an event while they wake, and need recharging every few weeks or months depending on how busy the spot is. Wired PoE (CCTV) camera systems
A PoE camera system is what installers now mean by CCTV: IP cameras each connected by one Ethernet cable that carries both power (Power over Ethernet) and video to a network video recorder with a hard drive inside. These systems record 24/7, don’t depend on Wi-Fi and keep recording if the internet drops. As a price guide, Reolink’s NVS8-8MD4 kit (four 4K cameras, an 8-channel NVR and a 2 TB drive) was listed at $1,299 at Harvey Norman in September 2026.
The work is in the cabling: each camera needs a Cat 5e or Cat 6 run back to the recorder or a PoE switch, usually through the ceiling space. Hikvision and Dahua are two of the world’s biggest CCTV makers, and their hardware is also sold under other brand names. Both have been restricted by some overseas governments on security grounds, so whichever brand you choose, keep the recorder off the open internet and install firmware updates.

Local recording wins on cost and privacy. Hide the recorder in a cupboard or ceiling space so it can’t be carried off, and put it on a small UPS so a power cut doesn’t end the recording. Cloud recording keeps a copy off-site, which matters when the camera itself is at risk. The cost adds up: in NZ, Arlo Secure costs $7.99 a month for one camera, $14.99 a month for unlimited cameras, or $19.99 a month for the Plus plan with person and vehicle recognition. Three years of the unlimited plan is about $540, often more than the cameras. Cloud clips also use upload bandwidth, and a typical Fibre 100 plan uploads at 20 Mbps.
A sensible middle path is local recording for every camera, plus a cloud plan only on the one or two cameras a thief could reach.
How much storage do your cameras need?
Storage depends on bitrate, the amount of data each camera produces per second. Recording 1 Mbps around the clock uses 10.8 GB a day, so a camera’s resolution, codec, frame rate and recording mode drive the size of drive you need. Plug your own numbers into the calculator.

The bitrate fills in from typical settings (H.264 at 15 fps: 1080p 2 Mbps, 4MP 4 Mbps, 5MP 6 Mbps, 4K 8 Mbps; H.265 assumed 40% lower; scaled by frame rate). If your camera or NVR shows its actual bitrate, type it in. Wi-Fi cameras often run lower: TP-Link puts a 1080p Tapo at about 8 GB a day. Drive suggestions include 10% headroom.

As a worked example, four 2K (4MP) cameras using H.265 at 15 fps average about 2.4 Mbps each, or 26 GB per camera per day. Keeping 30 days of 24/7 footage takes about 3.1 TB, so a 4 TB drive fits with headroom. Switch the same cameras to motion-only recording with around three hours of activity a day and the total drops to roughly 390 GB.
Three settings that save the most space
- Use H.265 if every camera and the recorder support it. HEVC typically needs 25 to 50% less data than H.264 for similar quality.
- Record at 15 fps. Cameras set to 50 Hz (the NZ mains frequency) usually offer up to 25 fps; 15 fps is plenty for security footage and cuts storage by around 40%.
- Buy surveillance-rated drives such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk, which are designed for writing video around the clock.
What to look for in a home security camera
Resolution and detail
2K (4MP) is the sweet spot for most home cameras. 4K helps on wide views where you want to zoom in on a face or number plate, but it roughly doubles storage and upload needs. Resolution alone doesn’t decide detail: a narrow lens aimed at the gate shows more detail there than a wide 4K lens covering the whole section. Night vision
Standard infrared gives black-and-white footage to roughly 10 to 30 metres, depending on the model. Starlight sensors and built-in spotlights give colour at night, and a spotlight doubles as a deterrent. Infrared reflects off glass, so never aim a night-vision camera through a window.
Smart detection
Person, vehicle and pet detection cut the false alerts caused by trees, cats and headlights. Check where it lives: Tapo includes it free, while Arlo keeps person and vehicle recognition for its Plus plan.
Weatherproofing
Look for IP66 or IP67 on anything outside. Neither rating covers salt air or UV, so coastal homes should favour models with metal housings, mount cameras under eaves and use stainless fixings.
Local access and integrations
Cameras that support RTSP or ONVIF can record to almost any NVR, NAS or Home Assistant setup, which keeps you from being locked into one app. Most PoE cameras and many plug-in Wi-Fi cameras (including Tapo) offer this; battery cameras generally don’t.

Security camera installation in NZ
Plug-in, battery and solar cameras are straightforward DIY jobs: a drill, a ladder and the app. PoE cabling is also low-voltage work many people do themselves, though working in a ceiling space means watching for old wiring, insulation and nails.
Mains power is different. WorkSafe says homeowners who own and live in a property can do some electrical work themselves, but they can’t connect it to the supply; a licensed electrical inspector has to check and connect it. In practice, a new outdoor power point for a camera is a job for an electrician. PoE avoids the question, because power comes down the data cable from the recorder or switch.
If you pay for installation, ask where the recorder will be hidden, what cable is used, whether the cameras support ONVIF (so you are not locked into the installer’s app) and who looks after firmware updates.
Security cameras and the Privacy Act
At home, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s guidance on CCTV at home says the Privacy Act generally doesn’t apply to individuals filming their own property, unless the filming would be highly offensive to a reasonable person, such as looking into a neighbour’s bathroom. Images of what is visible from the street aren’t treated as highly offensive. It recommends talking to neighbours first, putting up a sign, not aiming cameras at neighbours’ windows or private areas, not keeping footage longer than you need and never posting neighbours’ footage on social media. If a camera records a crime, give the footage to Police rather than sharing it online.
Businesses, landlords filming common areas and other organisations are covered by the Act. The Commissioner’s CCTV guidance for organisations expects a clear purpose before installing, signs saying who operates the cameras and how to contact them, no audio recording unless it is really needed, secure storage with a set retention period, and a process for people who ask for footage of themselves.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying on megapixels alone. Lens angle, night vision and placement matter as much as resolution.
- Ignoring running costs. A cheap camera with a monthly plan can cost more over three years than a dearer one without.
- Relying on weak Wi-Fi. Check the signal at each mounting spot on your phone before drilling, or run a cable.
- Leaving the recorder exposed. Hide it, and don’t open ports on your router to reach it; use the maker’s app or a VPN.
- Never testing at night. Look at the live view after dark before you finish, as glare, spider webs and porch lights all ruin night footage.
