The low sun angle is the other half of the problem. At midwinter the noon sun sits only about 30 degrees above the horizon in Auckland and about 20 degrees in Dunedin and Invercargill, so trees, fences, neighbouring houses and your own roofline shade a panel for far longer than they do in summer. A spot that is sunny in March can be in shadow all day in June.

Sun data: NIWA mean daily global solar radiation for June and December on a flat surface (Auckland 1.8 and 6.3 kWh/m², Invercargill 1.0 and 5.9). Assumes 50% of the panel’s rated output reaches the battery after angle, cable, charging and temperature losses; 2 W while recording or streaming and 0.03 Wh a day on standby, roughly in line with Tapo’s C425 claim of 300 days from a 10,000 mAh battery at 230 seconds a day; and a 37 Wh (10,000 mAh) battery. With the default settings, a 2.5 W panel facing north in Christchurch collects about 1.6 Wh on an average June day, while a camera recording 20 twenty-second clips and two minutes of live view uses about 0.32 Wh. That is roughly five times what it needs. Move the same camera under a south-facing eave in Invercargill, pointed at a road that triggers it 100 times a day, and the panel collects about 0.3 Wh against 1.2 Wh used, so a full 10,000 mAh battery would be flat in about six weeks.

Getting the most from a camera solar panel

  • Face the panel north and tilt it steeply for winter, roughly your latitude plus 10 to 15 degrees, or about 50 to 60 degrees in most of NZ.
  • Keep it clear of shade between about 10 am and 2 pm in June, when most winter energy arrives.
  • Use the panel’s extension cable so the camera can watch the right spot while the panel sits in the sun.
  • Cut false triggers with activity zones and lower sensitivity, and shorten the clip length.

Tapo solar cameras

For the budget end, the Tapo solar kits are the obvious start, and the C660 KIT’s 4K sensor and dual-band Wi-Fi make it good value at about $240. The C425 battery camera can also take Tapo’s A202 panel if you want a fixed view rather than pan/tilt.

eufy solar cameras

eufy’s solar cameras cost more but need no subscription and can feed a HomeBase that keeps footage inside the house. Eufy says the eufyCam 3 needs about two hours of direct sun a day to stay topped up, which is a useful benchmark for checking a mounting spot in June. Eufy also sells a separate Smart Solar Panel ($129) for compatible cameras.

Arlo and solar

Arlo sells a solar panel charger for cameras such as the Pro 6th Gen, but its cameras need an Arlo Secure plan to save recordings.

Solar cameras with no Wi-Fi: 4G options

A solar camera removes the power cable, not the need for a network. Most still connect over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, which rarely reaches a gate 200 metres down a lifestyle-block driveway. There are two fixes.

  • Bring Wi-Fi to the camera. An outdoor Wi-Fi extender or a point-to-point wireless link can carry your home network to a shed or gate, and then any Wi-Fi solar camera works.
  • Use a 4G camera. Models with a SIM slot send clips over the mobile network instead, such as Arlo’s Go 2 ($489) or eufy’s 4G LTE Cam S330 ($799.95). Check coverage from your network at the exact spot, budget for a data plan, and use activity zones so a windblown hedge doesn’t eat your data.

Choosing a solar panel for a security camera

Camera panels are small, typically 2 to 3 W, and the camera’s own charging circuit sets a ceiling on how fast it charges. The C660 KIT’s A201 panel, for example, charges at up to 2.5 W. A larger panel won’t raise that ceiling, but it reaches it more often on dull winter days, which is exactly when you need it. Stick to the maker’s panel or one it lists as compatible, so the plug, voltage and charging limits match.

  • Mounting the panel where the camera goes. The best camera spot is often a shaded south wall. Run the panel’s cable to a sunny spot instead.
